May, 2016

Dear Parents and Guardians:

The weather outside has been more like Fall but soon the sun will be shining and warmer weather will have everyone thinking about the summer.  Nevertheless, the school year is winding down and now more than ever we need to remind our students that their hard work and effort will pay off; our staff is committed to keeping the students focused and organized in these last few weeks.

On April 20th the Brackman School once again participated in the Academic Bowl at the Goetz Middle School in Jackson, N.J.  The teams competed in a modified jeopardy type tournament with questions from all subject areas.  The 6th 7th and 8th grade teams faced tough competition.  Our eighth grade team achieved its highest score in three years.  Congratulations for a job well done!  The seventh grade team placed 8th out of 21 participating schools. Great job 7th graders!  Our newly developed 6 grade team, placed 6th out of 16 schools.  We are proud to have them as part of Brackman team!  Thank you to all team members for their hard work and professionalism!

8th Grade PARCC testing is taking place May 3rd through May 5th.  Sixth and seventh grade have completed testing; thank you to everyone for your cooperation allowing us to facilitate these tests with minimum disruption.  Special thanks to Mrs. Hayes and her NJHS students who came up with some great activities for their peers to participate in between testing sessions each day; NJHS members and staff also did a wonderful job supervising and directing these activities each day.

The 8th Grade New Jersey ASK Science tests are taking place on May 25th.  Makeups will be held on June 1st.

The first week of May also was Teacher Appreciation week and I want to take the opportunity to thank our students and our teachers for their hard work so far and for the exceptional effort they have put forth to represent the school in the community. It is an honor and privilege to work with you all in our school.

I would also like to welcome Mrs. Gina Verderosa to the Brackman middle school!  Mrs. Verderosa comes to us from the Donahue School in Mr. Magee's absence as an interim Vice Principal; Mr. Magee is temporarily the interim Donahue Elementary Principal. Mrs. Verderosa taught 8th grade Science here at Brackman from 1995 until 2000.  We are very happy to have her join our Brackman family; many of her former students are excited as well!
In case you weren’t at the last Board of Education meeting, we have something special happening with our chorus students.  Mr. Wald is working on a video for the song "Strong" that his students wrote with him for cancer awareness. They are going to be debuting the video and having the song go live on iTunes the night of our concert, May 18th. The video involves his students as well as members of the Barnegat community that have been going through cancer treatment and survivors. There is story about "Strong" that will be running in a bunch of local papers; I know that Mr. Wald recently received a call from the Sandpiper! I hope that you can make the concert on May 18th but if not please check out the song on iTunes later this month. We would love any support that you could offer. Thanks so much Mr. Wald and students for your time and dedication to the Barnegat community!

I would also like to share an outstanding achievement of one of our 8th grade teachers.  Mr. Ryan Eckert has been working on a book about the 1994 Major Baseball strike. His book has just been released on Amazon; it is available for Kindle and later this summer should be available in paperback.  This episode in baseball is considered to be possibly the most epic historic event in professional sports. If you would like to check it out, here’s the Amazon link, http://amzn.com/B01EVT1B76

Although it is too early to reflect on this year in its entirety, I would like to thank the community for its input and support regarding participation in our surveys; your insights are so important and very much valued.  We want to continue to work with parents and students to create a school community that values academic distinction and a positive climate, and values every student and advocates for every child.  We will continue to reach out via surveys, social media, and hosting events.  We welcome your suggestions for improvement and welcome the opportunity to showcase the best our students have to offer.

I encourage you to stay involved by contacting teachers to inquire about your son/daughter's progress, communicating with guidance/child study team, and by volunteering to help at school events.  We have so much to be proud of!

School will be closed on Monday, May 30th in observance of Memorial Day.
