ROBERT L. HORBELT SCHOOL
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Welcome back to a wonderful school year here at Robert L Horbelt School. We are excited to say good bye to summer, open our doors, and welcome all our students and staff back. We anticipate a year of growth and fun for everyone involved. I am so excited to be here because there are so many good things going on: I plan on sharing these things with you throughout this year. As you know, the first day of school is Tuesday, September 6. We will open with an early dismissal for September 6, and 7; Thursday, September 9 will begin our regular full day schedule.
School hours are as follows:
Full Day: 8:20AM – 3:00 PM
Early Dismissal 8:20 AM – 12:20 PM
On both kinds of days students begin entering the building at 8:10.
Don’t forget that Kindergarten Orientation is scheduled for Thursday, September 1 at 1:15PM.
Every new school year presents new beginnings – and we welcome you to a year that is filled with many new beginnings. We are ready! The Horbelt School welcomes new staff members to our learning community. Last year we experienced the retirement of Mrs. Carney and Mrs. Farr. We wish them well in their retirement, but we will sorely miss them.
Here are the changes you can expect to see in staff:
We welcome Ms. Odgers to Kindergarten.
Mrs. Mayo has moved to 5th grade.
Mrs. Viglone has moved to 2nd.
We welcome Mr. Huff to 4th grade.
Ms. Avezzano will be joining us to help in multiple classes.
Ms. Belfiore will start the year in Kindergarten as Mrs. Fuoco is on maternity leave.
Ms. Hathaway joins us for a K+ program.
And, Mrs. Santolla will be moving to BSI!
I am excited about the Horbelt team--- I am excited to press on with the high level of care given to the students, and attention to academics that this school has modeled. Fun and learning, nurture and teamwork, pushing towards excellence – it’s a Horbelt thing!
This year our school will continue with its academic press and push towards literacy. We will continue with the Battle of the Books this year; last year our students read almost 3 million minutes, so we are going to start the year with that challenge – I know they can do it! Expect to hear more about that shortly! We will also continue our push in the area of writing. This year we will provide opportunities for our students work to be showcased. Both of these pushes focus on the promotion of literacy.
You will receive important information on the first day of school, including the emergency card. Please complete and return these forms in a timely manner. Please take a moment to become familiar with the Horbelt website. Throughout the year, important and timely information will be posted on each site. The PTA has also distributed membership packets, which list all PTA events throughout the school year, as well as volunteer information and membership information. If you did not receive one for your family, please let the office know and they will notify the PTA. You’ll note that the Parent Handbook has been updated – you can find this under the “Policies” tab on the Horbelt Website. Finally, please note that for some of the required papers you need to sign, there is now an option to do that on line. Please follow the directions for doing that from the letter sent to you from Ms. Wood, School Superintendent.
Back to School Night is scheduled this year for Wednesday, September 21, 2016, from 6:30 p.m - 8:30 p.m. This is a wonderful time to meet teachers and see the classroom where your child is learning. Teachers will review important information for the school year during this evening. Please join us for an informative night. More information about this night is forthcoming. If your child is in Grade 3-5 and is interested in riding his/her bike to school, please send in a letter requesting a permission form. A bike pass will then be given to your child’s homeroom teacher. Also for those students who walk in grades K-2, please make sure we receive your walker buddy letters.
I am so excited for the opportunity to work with you and continue the tradition of Horbelt pride. We know that it is the school/home partnership that makes all the difference in the world for the success of the child. We are looking forward to working with you in this way – for the success of our kids! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. The phone number for the main office is 660-7500 ext. 2000.
