 Dear Horbelt Families:

We are now entering our second month of school for the current school year and are settling into our daily routine. Our focus this year is on Horbelt “Respect” and how the students show their pride for the school as well as their classmates. The teachers nominate students who exhibit these characteristics. The student’s name is placed into a box located in the main office. All the names in the box are read weekly during the morning announcements. We then have a monthly drawing and the student whose name is selected receives a tee shirt. The program, which started a few years ago continues to be very popular with the children and helps to instill pride in them, toward their classmates, and in the school.

The PTA is still accepting membership dues and new parent signups for anyone who is interested in joining. Our PTA does a fabulous job in sponsoring many and varied activities for the children. Through the year the PTA sponsors a variety of fundraisers, some of which help pay for the children’s class trips during the school year. You should have received a packet to sign up for PTA via our School Messenger program. In addition, this membership packet can be accessed on line through the PTA link.

For your convenience, I have listed below activities that will take place during the month. They are as follows:

 October 2 & 3                           School Picture Days

October 7                                 Pumpkin Patch during recess

 October 8                                  Kindergarten Class Trip

 October 8                                  PTA Walk-A-Thon

 October 10                                Fire Truck Visit

 October 10                                Progress Reports Issued

October 13 & 14                        School Closed, Columbus Day

 October 15                                PTA Meeting @ 7:00

October 22                                Grade 3 Class Trip

 October  24                               PTA Trunk or Treat, 6:30 – 8:30

 October 31                                Halloween Parade/Parties

An event that everyone looks forward to is the annual Halloween parade and class party. Because of the number of children who have peanut allergies, please remember that if you are bringing in food for classroom parties, no nuts or hard candy are permitted for the children. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. If you have any questions, please contact the PTA Classroom Coordinator or Mrs. Dwyer, our school nurse. The parade begins at approximately 1:30. Weather permitting, the students will march outside for everyone to enjoy.  We have been speaking to the students about staying safe and being cautious as they “Trick or Treat.” Please reiterate this with your children so the day is marked with wonderful memories.

As you know, the Battle of the Books was a huge success last year!   A million minutes is a huge number, but I felt our students could do more. So for this year’s Battle, I have challenged our students to read TWO million minutes. That equates to thirty minutes a day, 5 days a week for each student! I KNOW they can do this.   We will also continue with our push for sound attendance with our All Star Attendance program. Classes with perfect attendance daily will post a star outside their classroom. Weekly winners will be announced every Friday. The class with the best attendance for the month will win a prize.   This focus on attendance did help us improve our attendance last year! We are confidently looking to see that continue this year!

Looking ahead to November, I would like to remind you that school will be closed on November 4 for a Teacher’s Professional Day and for the teacher’s convention on Thursday and Friday, November 6 & November 7, 2014.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please see me.
