ACES
The Academics, Communication, and Essential Skills (ACES) Program provides a tailored educational environment designed for students primarily diagnosed with autism within the school district. These students require a specialized approach to intervention and instruction addressing skill deficits effectively. The instructional framework for ACES is based on the core principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA), prioritizing individualized support to foster holistic development and promote significant advancements in academics, communication, and essential life skills.
Classrooms within the ACES program are equipped with a comprehensive array of resources and strategies to support students diagnosed with autism. These include the integration of visual supports, structured routines, and sensory-friendly environments to create an optimal learning environment. Individualized instruction tailored to each student's unique needs is emphasized, alongside dedicated life skills components and social skills instruction. Positive behavioral support techniques are utilized to foster a conducive learning environment, complemented by communication supports to facilitate effective interaction. Collaboration with support services ensures a holistic approach to student development, while the provision of a safe and calming space promotes emotional well-being. Additionally, complex annual assessments specifically designed for students with autism are conducted to track progress and tailor interventions accordingly.
The ACES program offers a multitude of benefits to its students, enhancing their educational experience and fostering inclusivity. These advantages include increased participation in community-based intervention (CBI) activities across all grade levels and ensuring students have access to adaptive specials tailored to their needs. Collaboration with the Barnegat Elementary Parent Teacher Association (BEPTA) enables the district to host sensory-friendly events and promote engagement and inclusivity within the broader school community. Professional development opportunities are tailored specifically to the program, equipping educators with the necessary skills to support students effectively. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to engage in meaningful activities with non-disabled peers on a rotating schedule, facilitating social interaction and mutual learning. Additionally, the provision of a courtyard play area offers a safe and stimulating environment for recreational activities, contributing to the holistic development of ACES students.
