English Language Arts
Barnegat Township School District is committed to delivering an engaging and challenging English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum for all students, K-12. Our vision is to foster the skills, understanding, and critical thinking abilities students need to thrive in their academic and personal lives. The K-12 ELA curriculum aligns with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, which outline the skills and knowledge students should attain in their study of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students who meet the criteria for advanced coursework at RLHS and maintain a high level of performance throughout high school have opportunities to enroll in advanced classes such as AP English Literature and AP English Language. Placement into these programs is based on multiple measures, including, but not limited to, final grades, standardized assessment scores, Benchmark assessments, and teacher recommendations.

iReady Magnetic Foundation is the district’s reading program for students in grades K–2, providing explicit foundational skills instruction in areas such as phonemic awareness, phonics, word recognition, and fluency. i-Ready Magnetic Reading is the reading program for grades 3–4, supporting students in building vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and deeper understanding of increasingly complex texts.
Heggerty is a structured, research-based phonemic awareness program that provides short, daily lessons focused on skills such as rhyming, blending, segmenting, isolating, and manipulating sounds. The lessons build students’ foundational literacy skills and support their development as accurate, fluent readers and spellers.
