Security
Barnegat Township School Security Department
We envision a safe and secure school district wherein all students, teachers, administrators, support personnel and visitors are free to concentrate and learn in an environment with complete peace of mind for their safety. All threats to a safe environment will be responded to, and resolved by a dedicated, well trained and professional security staff.
Mission Statement
The Security Department is responsible for the safety, security and well-being of all Barnegat Township School District students, faculty, staff and property. Our goal is to provide a safe and secure school environment so that the district is prepared to properly respond to emergencies.
Our Security Goals are accomplished by:
Maintaining a close relationship with school administration to assist them with their efforts in enforcing Board of Education Policies and Procedures.
Assisting in the development of crisis plans, building security initiatives and training for school personnel in handling of crisis situations.
Working closely with our local, county and state first responders to enhance and support our district preparedness.
Our security department will display professional and confident conduct as we execute our responsibilities to ensure an overall safe educational environment.
Emergency Preparedness
The Barnegat Township Public School District acknowledges that the safety of our students and staff is of prime importance and all necessary steps will be taken to protect their welfare in an emergency situation.
An emergency can be internal or external:
An internal emergency is one which originates within the confines of the school structure and may include fire, structural collapse, bomb threat, intruder, dangerous chemical spills inside the building, or any other emergency situation that may originate inside the structure and may endanger the occupants.
An external emergency is one which originates outside the confines of the school structure and may include severe weather such as a tornado, dangerous chemical release outside the building, or any other emergency situation that may originate outside the structure and endanger the occupants.
In the case of any emergency the superintendent or his designee has the ultimate authority to make the immediate and/or final decision regarding evacuating the schools.
Emergency preparedness is a process that requires continual review and readjustment.
Security Personnel
The Barnegat Township School Security Department is staffed by both armed and unarmed school security officers and a department secretary, who are overseen by a security coordinator. All SSO’s are retired law enforcement personnel and are required to maintain licensing through the New Jersey State Police / Retired Police Officers program.
