SHIELD Program

Student High Intensity Enrichment and Leadership Development

A Partnership with Barnegat Police Department

The SHIELD (Student High Intensity Enrichment and Leadership Development) Program is a unique partnership between the Barnegat Township School District and the Barnegat Police Department designed for students interested in exploring careers in law enforcement, public safety, and criminal justice.  Through a combination of classroom instruction, leadership development, and real-world learning experiences, students gain foundational knowledge of the law enforcement profession while developing the communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making skills essential for success in both college and future careers.

Developed collaboratively by school district administrators and members of the Barnegat Police Department, the SHIELD curriculum emphasizes personal growth, integrity, professionalism, community engagement, and civic responsibility.  Students begin by taking Law, Duty, and Leadership or SHIELD I, which integrates the foundational principles and leadership components of the SHIELD program.  Students may then continue into SHIELD II and SHIELD III, where they further develop their knowledge, leadership abilities, and career readiness through advanced coursework and experiential learning.

The SHIELD pathway fulfills the New Jersey Department of Education Career and Technical Education (CTE) graduation requirement while preparing students for future educational and career opportunities in law enforcement and public service.  Students interested in joining the program should speak with their school counselor for enrollment information.
