• 8th Grade Science consists of the following units:

Physical Science- Sub level topics include Sound Waves,  Light, and skills in technology. Would it be really cool to actually "see" sound? Can we simulate sound and light in a lab so that we can understand it better? Have you ever used a tone generator? Can you hear sounds that others can't? Can excellent hearing bring out any positive attributes in life? Are light and sound related? What colors are we actually seeing when we see an object? We will answer these questions together and explain the "why's" in these science phenomena.

Life Science- Sub level topics include: Heredity, Genetics, Evolution, Extracting genetic material, proteins and chromosomes, Natural Selection, Evidence of Common Ancestry, Diversity, and comparative anatomy with chromosomes. Are we actually related to other species in the Animal Kingdom? Have all species changed over time? What does the number of chromosomes have to do with the intelligence of the animal or mammal? What is the smartest animal in the world? We will answer these questions together.

Earth Science- Topics include: Earth's Surface, Earth's Geologic History, Minerals, Rocks, and Pangea, the movement of land masses, "The Restless Earth"  Core samples can be taken right here on campus to see if we can truly trace the History of Barnegat and surrounding areas. How do you think we can measure Geologic Time? Do you understand how the Rock Cycle works? Where do rocks come from anyway? Are all volcanoes still technically active? What creates natural disasters? We will answer these questions together.

The combination of these sciences makes this year's course invigorating, challenging, and answers many questions in all areas of our world; people, places, and things. Our labs are hands-on and are designed to have students partake in a simulation or phenomenon that is engaging, useful to our everyday lives, and fun. Let's start eh art of "thinking" about our thinking process, you may be very surprised with what yo ualready know.

Please come prepared for class daily and open up your science minds for your willingness to learn

You will need a 100 page "Marble" composition notebook

Please charge your Chromebooks daily, as we will use these for classwork, homework, and virtual labs and different virtual platforms.

You will also need a pencil or pen, and index cards.
